Tian Keyu, a former ByteDance intern and Peking University graduate has Closes nearly $30 million for a stealth AI startup focused on developing world models. The funding round includes investments from 5Y Capital, IDG Capital and Eastern Bell Capital according to Bloomberg.
The investment values the startup at around $200 million post-money. The company is still operating in stealth. Has not yet publicly launched a product.
Startup Focuses on World Models
Tian’s startup is developing AI systems designed to understand and simulate real-world physics and mechanics. Such world models can support applications including robotics, autonomous driving, interactive video and other forms of AI.
The startup currently has around 10 employees, including former ByteDance workers.
Tian wants to build an AI-focused representation system for processing visual information. The system uses around 200,000 symbols to represent information in a way that is intended to be more efficient for AI models than human language.
According to Tian the technology could reduce the computing cost of generating video by least an order of magnitude.
Plans to Demonstrate AI Technology
Tian plans to demonstrate the startup’s technology at events before releasing a full AI model in 2027.
The company is working on training its technology using amounts of video data. Tian said the team aims to use its AI-oriented visual representation system to process information that's difficult to describe efficiently using conventional human language.
The approach builds on Tian’s AI research, including a paper that was recognised among the Best Paper Awards at NeurIPS 2024.
Tian Keyu’s ByteDance Background

Before starting his venture Tian spent around three years at ByteDance as an intern.
ByteDance terminated his employment in 2024 describing the incident as a " violation." Tian later acknowledged that he had shut down another intern’s program to computing resources for other researchers.
A civil case brought by ByteDance resulted in a court ordering Tian to pay 500,000 yuan for breach of contract according to the ruling reported by Bloomberg.
Despite the controversy Tian has since returned to AI research. Is now building his own company around world-model technology.
Growing Interest in World Models
Tian’s funding comes as investor interest in world models and physical AI continues to grow
Researchers and companies are exploring world models as a way to help AI systems understand environments and interact with them. The technology is being investigated for areas such as robotics, autonomous systems, video generation and virtual environments.
Tian’s startup is entering this growing field with a focus on making AI systems more efficient, at processing and generating information.
