Israel-Based Insightec Strategic Collaboration with Charles River

Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. and Insightec, a global healthcare company that uses focused ultrasound to transform patient care, launched a five-year strategic collaboration to offer Charles River’s clients a comprehensive global service and technology platform for focused ultrasound (FUS) drug discovery and preclinical development of neuroscience therapeutics.

Insightec’s low-frequency ultrasound platform non-invasively breaks the blood brain barrier to deliver medications to brain regions. The treatment has shown potential in improving neurological medicine efficacy for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cancer patients.

“Our collaboration with Insightec represents a significant step forward in advancing neuroscience research,” said Professor Julie Frearson, PhD, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at Charles River. “As we look toward the future of drug discovery, we recognize that technology will be a cornerstone of innovation. The integration of focused ultrasound technology into our preclinical services will enhance the precision and effectiveness of therapeutic delivery strategies, allowing us to refine our use of research models and support the discovery of novel medicines.”

In response to the growing need to rapidly develop and deliver genetic medicines, biologics, and immunotherapies in multiple Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) preclinical models in neuroscience, the collaboration provides powerful CNS drug delivery for multiple drug types.

Low-intensity focused ultrasound and microbubble resonators noninvasively modify the blood-brain barrier, enabling precise drug administration to deep brain areas with Insightec. Insightec’s technology could improve central nervous system (CNS) delivery for genetic medications, biologics, and immunotherapies for difficult-to-treat CNS illnesses like neurodegeneration, neurodevelopment, and neuro-oncology.
