Reliance Power to Develop Bhutan's Largest Solar Project in ₹2,000 Crore Joint Venture

Reliance Power has joined hands with Bhutan’s Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) to build the country’s biggest solar power project. The project will cost ₹2,000 crore and produce 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Both companies will share the work and profits equally and build, own, and run the project together.

This project is set to be the most significant private foreign investment in Bhutan’s solar energy sector so far.

Reliance Power has signed an agreement with Green Digital Private Limited, a company owned by DHI, to sell the electricity from the solar project through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

“The landmark solar investment in Bhutan underscores Reliance Group’s strategic focus on expanding its renewable energy portfolio while reinforcing its long-term commitment to strengthening India-Bhutan economic cooperation. Reliance Power’s total clean energy pipeline stands at 2.5 gigawatts peak (GWp) in the solar segment, making it India’s largest player in the integrated solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) segment,” the company said in a statement.

The new solar power plant will help Bhutan and nearby countries like India by providing more clean energy. Reliance Power said in a statement that it will sell the electricity to Green Digital under a long-term deal.

The company has started searching for contractors by inviting competitive bids to make sure the work is high quality and fairly priced. It also talks to banks and other lenders to arrange money for the project.

This solar project is part of a bigger plan that started in October 2024, when Reliance Enterprises—a joint venture between Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure—teamed up with DHI.

That earlier agreement also involved working together on the 770 MW Chamkhar Chhu-I hydroelectric project, which helps support Bhutan’s goal of producing clean energy.
