Singapore and Norway Launch Joint Research Grant to Develop Greener Shipping Solutions
Nov 5, 2026 | By Carmela Catilo

Singapore and Norway have launched a joint research grant programme to develop technologies that can reduce emissions and support the decarbonization of international shipping.
The initiative brings together the maritime research, technology and industry expertise of both countries to address common challenges and develop practical solutions for the global shipping sector.
The programme is jointly launched by Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI).
The grant call builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between MPA and RCN in April 2024 to strengthen cooperation in maritime research, development, education and training.
Three Key Research Areas
The joint research programme will focus on three main areas:
- Alternative Fuels and Energy Infrastructure: Developing safer ways to handle alternative marine fuels, improving bunkering and fuel storage technologies, and advancing charging infrastructure for electric vessels.
- Vessel Energy Efficiency and Emissions Reduction: Developing technologies to improve vessel performance, optimize onboard energy consumption and reduce fuel use.
- Digitalization and Greener Shipping Operations: Advancing voyage optimization, just-in-time arrivals, autonomous operations and data exchange between ships and ports to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
Funding of Up to $2.11 Million for Singapore Partners
Under the programme, the Singapore Maritime Institute will provide up to S$2.7 million (approximately US$2.11 million) to support research partners in Singapore.
The Research Council of Norway will make up to NOK 20 million available for Norwegian research partners.
Third Singapore–Norway Joint Research Grant Call
This is the third joint maritime research grant call between Singapore and Norway. The previous calls were launched in 2015 and 2018 and supported four research projects focused on maritime energy efficiency, emissions reduction and emerging technologies.
The latest initiative aims to strengthen research collaboration between the two countries and accelerate the development of cleaner and more efficient technologies for international shipping.
