Tencent and Visa Partners

Tencent and Visa have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration in cross-border payments, AI-powered commerce, and enterprise artificial intelligence (AI). The partnership aims to improve international payment services and support businesses expanding into global markets.

The agreement will bring together Tencent’s digital platforms and payment solutions with Visa’s global payment network and cross-border money transfer services.

Focus on Cross-Border Payments

The partnership aims to make payments easier for people travelling between China and other countries. Tencent and Visa plan to develop payment solutions for participating merchants across the Weixin Pay and Visa networks.

The companies will also explore ways to improve international money transfers through Visa Direct. The service could help people living overseas transfer money into the Weixin Pay ecosystem.

The initiative builds on their existing collaboration to support international visitors using payment services in China.

AI-Powered Commerce and Payments

Tencent and Visa will explore how artificial intelligence and AI agents can improve digital shopping and payment experiences. AI agents are software systems that can perform tasks on behalf of users, potentially including parts of the purchasing process.

The companies aim to develop smoother and more secure digital commerce experiences while maintaining consumer trust, security, and control.

The collaboration will also extend to Tencent’s international AI businesses, building on existing work in global payments, marketing, and risk management.

Expanding Existing Collaboration

Tencent’s international payments platform, Midas, and Visa have worked together for several years, particularly in the gaming industry. The new agreement expands their cooperation into additional areas, including AI-powered payments and cross-border financial services.

The companies will also explore opportunities to improve payment experiences for global customers and support the international growth of businesses within Tencent’s ecosystem.

Dowson Tong, senior executive vice president of Tencent and CEO of its Cloud and Smart Industries Group, said the collaboration would help serve users and businesses across Tencent’s ecosystem. He highlighted the potential for Tencent Cloud’s AI capabilities to complement Visa’s global network and expertise.

Forest Lin, corporate vice president of Tencent and head of Tencent Financial Technology, said the companies would strengthen cross-border payment connections as travel and commerce between China and the rest of the world continue to grow.
