Tencent opens new 500-Person Tech Hub office in malaysia

Tencent officially opened its new office in Kuala Lumpur today. At the launch, Digital Minister YB Gobind Singh Deo said the opening comes at an important time for Malaysia’s digital growth.

Over the past two years, the government has been working to strengthen the country’s data infrastructure, AI rules, cybersecurity, digital identity systems, payment networks, and creative content development.

The minister said Malaysia is working to build an innovation-driven economy supported by strong infrastructure, skilled talent, and an ecosystem that attracts high-value investments. These efforts support the country’s long-term goals under Malaysia Madani and the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also noted that the global competition for technology, talent, and investment is increasing — and Malaysia is determined to stay competitive.

The minister told industry players that Malaysia already has the essential foundations needed to grow its digital sector. The main focus now is to keep the ecosystem attractive so that global technology companies continue to invest in the country.

“We welcome Tencent’s continued commitment and investment in Malaysia as a strategic base for talent development and global collaboration,” said Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of Digital, Malaysia.

The minister told industry players that Malaysia already has the key ingredients to grow its digital economy. Now, the focus is on keeping the ecosystem attractive to global tech companies.

A big part of this effort is developing talent. New plans include improving links between universities and industry, expanding TVET programmes, and offering specialised training in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, gaming, and creative content. The aim is to make Malaysia not just a user of digital talent, but a global creator of it.

Meanwhile, Judy Wong, Country Manager of Tencent Malaysia, said that Malaysia’s strong digital infrastructure, supportive government policies, and skilled workforce make it an excellent place for digital innovation.

“This new office marks the beginning of an exciting next chapter, where we will deepen our cloud and AI innovation partnerships, support Malaysia’s digital ambitions, cross-border collaboration, and continue nurturing local creative and technology talent,” he added.

In esports and digital entertainment, Tencent is looking at bringing more international esports tournaments and creator-focused events to Malaysia, strengthening the country’s reputation as a regional center for gaming and digital culture.

To support the growth of Malaysia’s gaming industry, Tencent — through Level Infinite — has partnered with Claz’room College to offer academic guidance and internship opportunities to local students.

As Tencent expands globally, the company says Malaysia’s strong digital ecosystem, skilled talent, and forward-looking policies position the country to become an important hub for innovation, connectivity, and digital experiences worldwide.
