Thunes Raises UnionPay Payout Limit to $10,000 for Transfers to China
Nov 3, 2026 | By Carmela Catilo

Singapore-based payments network Thunes has increased its UnionPay payout limit to $10,000 per recipient per day in mainland China. The upgrade will enable faster and larger cross-border transfers through UnionPay cards across 79 major Chinese banks.
Thunes Expands UnionPay Payment Network
The upgraded service was announced on November 2, 2026. It builds on the direct connection between Thunes and UnionPay International, which was launched in January 2026.
Through this connection, financial institutions, payment service providers and money transfer operators using Thunes can send money directly to eligible UnionPay cards in mainland China.
Supports Instant Payouts Across 79 Chinese Banks
The expanded service supports instant payouts of up to $10,000 per recipient cardholder per day. It connects to 79 major banks across mainland China.
These include Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Bank of Communications and China Merchants Bank.
Thunes provides access to the UnionPay network through a single application programming interface (API), allowing its members to connect with the payment infrastructure.
Expands Cross-Border Transfer Corridors
The service is available for payment corridors covering Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and the United States.
The higher payout limit is expected to make larger personal transfers easier by reducing the need to split payments across multiple days.
The original connection also supported remittances from markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom and France, with funds delivered directly in Chinese yuan to eligible UnionPay cards.
Thunes Aims to Improve Cross-Border Payments
Thunes Deputy CEO Chloe Mayenobe said the increased payout limit would help the company's members expand cross-border payment services into mainland China.
The company said the service operates with its compliance and security controls. However, it has not disclosed transaction volumes, transfer fees or expected customer adoption.
The service is designed for banks, digital wallets, remittance providers and other financial institutions using Thunes. Individual customers can access it through participating payment providers, depending on their availability and compliance requirements.
