Sea Limited, a tech company based in Singapore, announced last Thursday that it has opened a new global headquarters for its digital financial services in Singapore. They also revealed that they are rebranding their SeaMoney service to Monee.
Sea said in a statement that the new Monee headquarters at Rochester Commons covers 10 floors and more than 200,000 square feet.
The headquarters will first house over 1,000 digital finance workers, with space for up to 1,500.
The facility will include Monee’s special teams for product management, artificial intelligence, and anti-money laundering—focusing on building strong skills in areas that are key to the future of the financial industry.
The rebranding from SeaMoney to Monee is the next step in developing Sea’s digital financial services.
Monee was chosen because it’s simple and easy to use in the markets it serves. It also clearly connects to the company’s goal: to improve the lives of consumers and small businesses through technology in all things related to money.
Its naming also echoes Shopee, reflecting the seamless and synergetic connection between the two ecosystems.
Dr. Tan See Leng, the Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, led the opening ceremony. He emphasized the importance of Monee’s growth and Singapore’s role in the future of digital financial services.
“Monee is already one of the biggest digital financial services companies in our region, but I believe we’re just seeing the beginning of its potential,”
“As Southeast Asia’s digital economy continues to grow, we remain committed to bettering the lives of consumers and small businesses through technology. Monee will continue to build a future where financial inclusion is a reality for all,” said Forrest Li, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sea.
He said that important organizations like Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), the Economic Development Board (EDB), and Enterprise Singapore (ESG) have helped create a strong environment for tech innovation in Singapore.
“The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) sees digitalization as a chance to make our financial services sector more lively and dynamic.”
“Our story of homegrown success and subsequent globalization would not have been possible without the strong support and positive environment provided by our home country,” he added.
The headquarters has over 100 meeting rooms for collaboration and spaces for product innovation. It also includes a multi-purpose hall and training areas to help develop talent.
The building has a café and gym, with special floors designed to support employee well-being and encourage a sense of community.
Since its launch in 2014, Monee has grown to become one of Southeast Asia’s largest digital financial platforms, offering products and services, including mobile wallets, payment processing, credit, banking, and insurtech.
Today, Monee serves users in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Brazil. It focuses on providing simple, easy-to-use, and inclusive financial solutions that meet real-life needs.
Monee has also started a digital banking group called MariBank to expand its regional presence, building on its foundation as a licensed digital bank in Singapore.
This setup helps Monee expand its financial access and offer its banking services throughout Southeast Asia.
