Sumit Jain has resigned from his position as cofounder and CEO of Unacademy’s test-prep business before the company’s planned merger with upGrad, which was founded by Ronnie Screwvala.
Jain joined Unacademy in 2020 after the edtech company acquired Graphy. In an internal message, Unacademy cofounder and CEO Gaurav Munjal said that Jain will continue to support the company as an advisor.
His departure comes at a time when Unacademy and upGrad have already applied for merger approval from the Competition Commission of India.
As per the report, Munjal stated that Jain's last day of employment in a full-time operational capacity will be June 30. Post which he will remain with the company in an advisory position.

The memo from Munjal read, “Sumit has been a strong support system and a Co-Founder for Unacademy since 2020. And I have personally known him since 2013, when CommonFloor acquired my first company, Flatchat. And more importantly, he has been a dear friend.”
“Sumit built two strong pillars for Unacademy. First is Graphy which is a growing, profitable Business for us. His acquisition of Spayee and then merging it with Graphy and then scaling it was really needle-moving for Unacademy Group. And then he helped make our Offline Business Profitable with a focus on Unit Economics and eventually converting them to Franchisees,” he wrote.
Sumit Jain joined Unacademy in 2020 after the company acquired his startup, Opentalk. Before that, he had co-founded the real estate platform CommonFloor. Interestingly, CommonFloor had earlier acquired Gaurav Munjal’s first startup, Flatchat, in 2016.
At Unacademy, Jain later led Graphy, the company’s SaaS platform designed for creators and educators. In September 2025, he was appointed CEO of Unacademy’s main Test Prep business.
At that time, the company said Jain was focusing on improving financial management and making the test preparation products better for users.
