MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil to Step Down After Two Year Tenure

Anuar Fariz Fadzil, CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), will step down on October 2, 2026, after completing his two year contract. He has decided not to renew his contract and plans to pursue opportunities outside the agency.

During his tenure, MDEC secured nearly MYR180 billion (about US$44 billion) in digital investments from more than 1,000 companies with Malaysia Digital status. The investments are expected to create more than 42,000 high value jobs for Malaysians.

Anuar Fariz Fadzil to Leave MDEC

MDEC said Anuar informed the board that he would not seek another contract term. The agency has not yet announced his successor.

MDEC chairman Ganesh Kumar Bangah thanked Anuar for his contribution and said he had focused the agency on measurable outcomes and stronger execution.

Under Anuar's leadership, MDEC placed greater emphasis on jobs, exports, revenue and investment. The agency also strengthened its role as Malaysia's specialist digital implementation agency.

Focus on AI and Digital Economy

One of Anuar's key priorities was supporting Malaysia's AI Nation 2030 ambition. During his tenure, MDEC also worked on the Malaysia Digital 2030 action plan, which focuses on AI adoption high-value digital investment, industry transformation and talent development.

The agency's role includes supporting Malaysia's digital economy, attracting technology investment and helping businesses grow within the country's digital ecosystem.

Anuar's tenure also focused on moving MDEC's work from measuring activities to measuring economic results. He said the agency should be judged by the results it delivers for the country, industry and Malaysians.

US$44 Billion in Digital Investments

According to MDEC, the agency secured close to US$44 billion in digital investments between 2025 and August 2026. These investments came from more than 1,000 companies with Malaysia Digital status.

The investments are expected to generate more than 42,000 high-value jobs. MDEC said the figures reflect its focus on attracting high-value investment while supporting Malaysia's wider digital economy.

What Comes Next for MDEC

Anuar said he decided to leave after completing his contract following considerable reflection. He expressed confidence in MDEC's future and said he was proud of what the agency and its partners had achieved during his tenure.

MDEC will now enter a leadership transition as Malaysia continues to develop its digital economy, AI capabilities, technology talent and digital infrastructure.

The agency has yet to announce who will succeed Anuar Fariz Fadzil as CEO.
